How will you deal
with your leftover foreign money after every business or vacation trip?
Research showed that the average international traveller, either on
business or vacation, was returning home with more than US$2 worth of
foreign currency in the form of loose change which could not be redeemed
in their home country. It was estimated that US$40 million in
convertible foreign change was lost every year as a result of
international passage. Since 1991, the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF
and Cathay Pacific Airways co-organised the "Change For Good"
campaign and has raised a total donation of over HK$24 millions for
UNICEF. This programme is a way of collecting donations from inflight
passengers returning home with leftover foreign currency. This gives the
"change" a special value and meaning as it will enable UNICEF
to help provide services to children and women in 160 developing
countries. Since 1991, CFG has collected more than 270 tonnes weight of
foreign coins around the world, which is as heavy as an Airbus A330. If
you have any leftover currency, you are welcome to send them to our
office. |

When you send a
UNICEF card or gift, you're sending a very special message. In 1947,
Jitka Samkova, a seven year-old Czechoslovakian girl painted a watercolour
in thanks for the help UNICEF had given her village immediately following
World War II. The design was reproduced as a UNICEF card in 1949, which
marked the start of the organisation's greeting cards sale. In addition
to our wide variety of greeting cards, you can also find a list of gift
items to satisfy your every single need, our gifts include gift wrap-paper,
mouse pad, coffee mug, puzzles, etc. For more information, please call
2833 6139.

The Hong Kong Committee
for UNICEF concerns the health and living of children in China and launched
the China Children's Week (CCW) since 1993. During the past three years
from 1993-1995, we had launched the fundraising project of "Polio
Eradication in China" and more than HK$27 million had been raised
for purchase of polio vaccines to immunise the infants in China. No
polio cases have been detected since 1995. In 1996, CCW was raised funds
for "Elimination Project of Neonatal Tetanus in China". The
results was encouraging with more than HK$6 million raised.
Social
Development Programme for Poor Areas in China (SPPA)
UNICEF co-operates
with the Chinese government to launch the "Social Development Programme
for Poor Areas in China" (SPPA). In China, 46 million people, mostly
found in the remote areas of interior provinces in the southwest and
northwest, are still living below the poverty line. Harsh natural environment
and frequent natural disasters throughout the year makes the social
development in the regions more difficult.

UNICEF, in partnership
with the local governments from 24 poor counties in 12 provinces, implementing
the SPPA to help alleviate poverty. Integrated development assistance
are channeled directly to these poor areas. Assistance is provided to
the teacher-education as a way to upgrade the qualification of school
teachers. In health and nutrition, in-service training is given to the
health workers to improve their quality and professional competence.
Universal immunisation is undertaking to immunise children against the
six preventable childhood diseases - measles, diphtheria, pertussis
(whooping cough), tetanus, tuberculosis and polio. UNICEF also supports
to construct community-based deep-well hand pumps, to establish safe
water supplies, sanitary latrines and educate local people on proper
personal hygiene. Micro-credit loan is provided to the women, to empower
them to benefit from improved social service. Women learn to improve
their own living standard through the operation of their own local income
generating enterprises. In this way, they create a better living environment
for themselves and their children.
I
would like to contribute to "Social Development Programme
for Poor Areas in China" (SPPA)
