UNICEF is the first UN agency and one of the first international organizations in China to respond to the Sichuan earthquake disaster. UNICEF has been working in Sichuan and other nearby quake affected provinces for more than two decades in health, early childhood development, water and sanitation, anti-trafficking, HIV/AIDS and local planning. Sichuan is one of the poorer provinces of China with a significant ethnic minority population. As a UN agency, UNICEF works as a full partner of the Government of China to improve the situation of children; therefore, its interventions are more sustainable, it has access to government agencies and ministries and is a respected international voice for children contributing to lasting change.
