UNICEF works in Nepal

UNICEF began operations in Nepal in 1964. The Kathmandu office opened in 1972 to support government efforts to provide much needed basic services to Nepali children. UNICEF is working hand in hand with development partners and the different Government agencies to ensure an environment for the health, protection, safety and well being of all Nepalese children and woman.

“Out-of-school Class”

In Nepal, there are some 250,000 primary-aged children out of school. The majority of these girls and children from disadvantaged households in rural areas. Due to poverty, 36% of all boys and 48% of all girls aged between 5 and 14 years work regularly.

UNICEF supported “Out-of-school Class” can provide these children with runs in most of the underprivileged neighbourhood, two classes a day in the morning and afternoon, providing free of charge structured learning opportunity for children, ensuring that many can eventually return to formal schooling or equip with basic life-skills.

“Decentralized Action for Children and Woman (DACAW)”

UNICEF’s “Decentralized Action for Children and Woman (DACAW)” is currently running in 23 districts in Nepal. UNICEF believes that empowering woman is the way to provide the best start in life for children.

Granting loans to the deprived households so they can support themselves by raising cattle
Trains these illiterate women to become Community Health Volunteers, so these illiterate women could be able to provide basic healthcare, such as weighting, diagnose and treat pneumonia and diarrhoea, to the newborns and young children in the villages.
provide legal support and counseling to children and women victims of domestic violence.

Emergency Relief

Nepal is prone to natural disasters such as flooding and earthquakes. Last year, the heavy rainfall has resulted in landslides, causing serious destructions and claiming life.

UNICEF provided immediate relief supports to the victims, and more importantly emergency preparedness activities and rebuilding works.
