Acknowledge Ceremony of ‘SDG Actioner Challenge’ for Ethnic Minority Youth

Hong Kong, 21 May 2023 -- Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK) hosted the Acknowledge Ceremony of ‘SDG Actioner Challenge’ for Ethnic Minority Youth today. The purpose of the ceremony was to commend schools and students who have actively participated in the programme.

 

The event was attended by Mr. Wong Chuen Fai, JP, Commissioner for Climate Change, Mr. Fong Chung Lun, MH, member of Advocacy Committee, UNICEF HK, Mr. WEI Aiguo, Executive Director, AEON Credit Service (Asia) Co. Ltd., school principals, teachers and students who participated in the programme.


Mr. Wong Chuen Fai, JP pointed out the importance of involvement of young people in Hong Kong’s carbon neutrality journey. He added that the HKSAR Government will continue to promote active participation of all community sectors in climate actions and adoption of low-carbon lifestyle, in striving for the target to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050.


Mr. Fong Chung Lun, MH encouraged students to share their experiences with their friends and family members as well as putting their ideas into practice, bringing positive changes to the community and combat climate change. Mr. WEI Aiguo praised the event for its significance in promoting a green future as well as social inclusion.


The ‘SDG Actioner Challenge’ for Ethnic Minority Youth was organized by UNICEF HK and sponsored by AEON Credit Service (Asia) Co., Ltd. The programme aimed to equip local ethnic minority youths with an in-depth understanding of SDG 13 on climate change. Participants were also encouraged to bring positive changes to the society through raising awareness of climate change.

 

Through various workshops, visits and field trips, participants were given the opportunity to learn more about protecting the environment and in their own groups, designed school or community-based projects to promote sustainable lifestyles.
At today's event, students were able to showcase their creative ideas to the public by creating low-carbon themed booths and demonstrating different initiatives such as school gardening, classroom energy saving devices, and upcycling second-hand clothes to support sustainability.
