UNICEF expresses alarm at the number of migrant and refugee deaths in the past week in the Central Mediterranean, many of whom were believed to be unaccompanied minors.
With 16,478 refugee and migrant children having arrived by sea in Italy in 2015 and more than 5,000 having entered the country already this year, UNICEF and the Government of Italy today announced a new collaboration to improve their care and protection.
Over 300,000 victims including women and children have been affected by the tropical cyclonic storm ‘ROANU’ which has caused landslides and heavy rains in 22 districts of the 25 districts in the country. Eighty-two people had been reported dead and 118 people claimed missing from the resultant landslides in the Kegalle district.
