On 27 December 2016 in east Aleppo City in the Syrian Arab Republic, Hasan (right), 10, collects water for his family in Shakoor neighbourhood. Hasan and his friends try to find some fun in their daily water fetching routine “I like to play with my friends when we collect water,” says Hasan. A couple of months ago, shrapnel hit Hasan’s neck. The injury eventually affected the movement of the right part of his body. “My hand is slightly tilted all the time because of the shrapnel in my neck. I usually use my left hand to carry the jerry can," says Hasan.

For the tens of thousands people returning to some neighbourhoods in east Aleppo City, getting clean and running water is a challenge. The fighting has damaged most of the water infrastructure in the city. Families in these areas rely entirely on water trucked with support from UNICEF. In addition to emergency water trucking of 600,000 litres per day, UNICEF and partners are repairing two main water network pipelines in Kadi Askar and Alsalhin that will serve neighbourhoods in east Aleppo City once the ongoing repair work is complete. UNICEF has also installed 20 water storage tanks in Shakoor and Hanno neighbourhoods.

On 12 August 2016 in the Syrian Arab Republic, a displaced child from al-Hamadaniyah neighbourhood in the western part of Aleppo now stays at a temporary shelter.

By end August 2016, children continue to bear the brunt of the latest surge in violence in Aleppo. In the eastern part of Aleppo, around 100,000 children remain trapped since early July. Water has ceased flowing through the public network, as the generator that operates the main water pumping station needs urgent repairs. UNICEF does not have safe access to provide the urgent humanitarian assistance needed in the area.

In the western part of Aleppo, an estimated 35,000 people were displaced when new waves of fighting hit the al-Hamadaniyah neighbourhood. Already displaced by the war and living in half-built apartment towers, again families had to flee and leave everything behind. Most families are currently staying in informal shelters such as schools and mosques as well as in parks and on the streets. UNICEF trucks in water daily for 300,000 of the most vulnerable people including newly displaced families in informal shelters. The main electricity network that powers pumping stations sustained damage in recent fighting. UNICEF supports the delivery of fuel to operate generators for water pumping stations and groundwater wells that provide safe drinking water to around 1.2 million people.

Two boys are cheered on by their companions during the long-jump event of a sports competition at the UNRRA-run El Shatt camp for Yugoslav refugees, near the north-eastern port city of Suez. Circa 1947 in Egypt, 1,000 Yugoslav refugees, after assembling in the UNRRA camp division warehouse in Cairo, the capital, were sent to the northern port city of Alexandria, where some 300 were assigned to the El Shatt camp near the north-eastern port city of Suez, UNRRA's largest refugee camp in the Middle East. UNRRA, the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, was created in 1943 to assist with relief operations and global recovery from the devastation of World War II. Focusing primarily on Europe and China, it finally closed in 1949 as its mandate was subsumed in the long-term development work of other United Nations agencies. UNRRA's work for children was taken over by UNICEF, created on 11 December 1946.
