On 17 May, a chair sits in the centre of a desolate street, which is covered in rubble and lined with destroyed buildings, in the Old City area of Homs, the capital of Homs Governorate.

In mid-May 2014 in the Syrian Arab Republic, displaced residents returned to the Old City area of Homs, the capital of Homs Governorate, to survey damage to their homes and businesses. The return followed the evacuation of rebels from Old City, the result of an agreement negotiated between the fighters and the Government. The now-devastated Homs has borne some of the heaviest and most prolonged fighting of the conflict. Across the Syrian Arab Republic, some 9.3 million people, including nearly 4.3 million children, have been affected by the conflict. Of those affected, over 6.5 million have been internally displaced. More than 2.7 million Syrians, 1.4 million of them children, have fled abroad – to nearby Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey – where they are registered or awaiting registration as refugees.
